Can a blown window be repaired?

Fixing a blown double glazed window unit...

Have you ever looked out of the window and realised that it’s misted up or cloudy inside? The technical term for this is a ‘blown window’ and it happens where the seal has broken in the unit causing condensation to seep into the void between the panes of glass.

Blown windows usually occur when the plastic bar inside the window reaches the point where it cannot absorb any more moisture and when windows have aged. The average window unit is made to last around 10 years however some will last a lot longer and others might need replacing sooner depending on their level of exposure to the elements.

What a lot of people don’t know is that a blown window can be repaired. We speak to a lot of customers who have made-do with blown window units for years because they did not want to replace the whole window.

When your window is blown, it not only mists up, you loose the benefits of the sound barrier and heat regulation. Also, a blown window may not always mist up but it will let the cold air in in the winter and the warm air out. If your room has suddenly got colder or the traffic seems louder than previously, it might be that the seals are no longer doing their job.

Fixing a blown unit generally means replacing the glass but keeping the frame.
Here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, depending on the age and condition of the frame, we may advise repairing or we may advise replacing the whole unit. We always look to repair if we can, however, if we feel that the repair is not the most cost effective solution or that it won’t have longevity, then we will chat to you about the different options that are available.

Don’t put up with misty double glazing. Contact us today for a free no-obligation quote to either repair or replace.

Bi fold doors are a fantastic addition to any house. They open up the back of your house allowing you to get a full view of the outside without any obstructions. Bi fold doors are a great way to create a feeling of space and of bring the outdoors into your home. Here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, we are able to supply bi fold doors for your home or business up to a maximum opening of 5 meters. By installing bifold doors, you are instantly letting more natural light into your home. Not only that, they open up your house connecting the inside to the outside without taking up lots of space. Bifold doors look fantastic. They are flexible so you can choose how open you want your house to be. Not only that, bifold doors offer much greater security than traditional patio doors. Here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, we recommend a brand called Smart who specialise in aluminium bi fold doors. The doors are lightweight and easily glide open and closed on stainless steel rollers. We only fit aluminium bifold doors. The reason for this is that UPVC is too heavy and the expansion and contraction in UPVC can cause lots of problems.

Did you know that here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, Mike started off his career in windows as a specialist glass cutter and making stained glass windows? A traditional skill, one that is sadly not so common in the world of double glazing and UPVC manufactured sealed units. Stained glass is an art form in which colored glass is cut into shapes and placed into a mosaic to form a picture. The glass is held in place by metal strips soldered together to gives the window or other object strength and stability. Stained glass is believed to originate from the Middle East and was used as a way of letting light into buildings and yet still allow the building to be completely closed. Stained glass windows are commonly used in Churches and other places of worship across the world yet can add a real statement to a home. Here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, we still love the traditional art of making (or repairing) a stained glass window and can make stained glass picture windows to tailored designs and sizes. A stained glass window can be a focal point in a room, brining in rays of coloured light. Homeowners can design their own stained glass windows for us to produce something that is unique to your home. Whatever your design, we can help! For more information on stained glass windows and to arrange a quote for a beautiful window for your home or office, why not get in contact with us today!

Here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, we are also very pleased to be able to offer composite front doors for our customers. Over the last few years, composite front doors have become a very popular for homeowners in the UK. Composite doors are made from a range of different materials, that when combined together, is stronger than the individual materials alone. This makes composite doors stronger and more durable than traditional doors. Composite doors have a wood-grain finish and they come in a variety of colours and add a lovely finish to a home. The doors look like they are wood however the composite mix, makes them much more durable and easy to look after. You could expect a composite door to last anything up to 35 years! The main advantage of having a composite door is that it won’t weather. The door won’t crack and it will never need to be repainted. A composite door often will come set in a frame with lantern windows alongside. There are many different designs from traditional composite doors to more contemporary composite doors. In 2020, the UK saw a significant rise in people investing in their homes and 2021 is set to be no different. As we move into Spring, many of us will be starting to think about our gardens and how we can make the most of them. This is even more prominent in 2021 as we are still in a national lockdown and for a lot of us, the prospect of an annual holiday is still on the back-burner. Adding a conservatory to your house will add around 5-10% to the value of your property however for most of us, the real value in a conservatory is having the additional living space and the ability to enjoy your garden all year round. The great thing about conservatories though is the versatility of what the space can be used for. For many families, it will be an additional living room, dining area or even a home office space. Whats more, since planning laws were relaxed back in 2010, you can also add a solid roof to your conservatory without having to apply for planning permission. Here at Dolphin Glass and Glazing, we supply and install beautiful conservatories for our clients. Whether you are looking at a small garden room, bespoke dining area or installing a conservatory to become a home office, we can help! To get a quote for a new conservatory, simply contact us to book an appointment and we will be very happy to come out and give you a quote. A conservatory is a fast and hassle free way to add additional space to your home.

Fed Up Of Condensation and Mold? We are often asked how can we reduce condensation and damp issues in a room. Both condensation and damp usually arise when there is poor ventilation. Poor ventilation can eventually lead mould on your ceilings, walls, window frames and furniture. Mold is easy to notice. It usually appears as black or green spotting and produces a musty smell Excessive mould can cause health problems, such as allergic reactions and cold-like symptoms. One way of helping to prevent the build up of condensation and mould is to have trickle vents in your double glazing. A trickle vent is fitted to either the window frame or sometimes between the glass and the frame. The vent allows a small amount of fresh air to circulate naturally through the room without having to open the window. This is great if for ground floor windows or in the colder months when you don’t want to have the windows open. A trickle vent will help improve the ventilation inside your home. If you suffer from condensation and get the odd spot of mold, then the vents will go a long way to helping improve the situation however it is important to realise that trickle vents will not cure a bad mold problem for this, you will need to open windows regularly to vent the air inside. Black mold needs moisture to grow so if you have a bad mold problem, then trickle vents may help the problem, but they won’t cure it. They are great for keeping rooms ventilated all year round. Trickle vents can be fitted to existing glazing. For more information, contact us today.
